Iconic yellow trams. Terracotta-topped houses. Narrow cobbled alleyways. Portugal’s colourful coastal capital is as Insta worthy as cities get. Its steep streets, rooftop bars and hilltop castles make the perfect lookouts to admire the views. But there’s more to Lisbon than that.

This is a city that perfectly pairs up old with new. You can spend your days roaming scenic old neighbourhoods, Medieval castles and riding vintage trams. And then stop for a cocktail or two at a hip rooftop hangout, or dive into the designer shops down Avenida Liberdade. And, if you’ve time, make a pitstop in Belem, four miles down the coast, for a look at its grand 16th-century tower and monastery.

Where to stay in Lisbon

Lisbon’s spread out among seven hills. Each neighbourhood has its own character, so make sure to choose carefully. Alfama tops a lot of lists for its boutique hotels tucked down tiny alleys, all sitting below the Moorish Castelo de São Jorge. It’s the oldest part of the city, so wheely suitcases aren’t advised! Baixa, in the centre, is the polar opposite. Think wide open streets, super-flash hotels and neoclassical buildings.

You’ve also got Principe Real, which is a trendy little spot. The whole place is alive with restaurants, shops and art galleries. But if you want something even more upbeat, book somewhere in Bairro Alto. It’s Lisbon’s night owl neighbourhood, with bars and clubs down every street. Or, there’s Chiado, which will charm you with its arty restaurants, theatres and eateries.

Top things to do in Lisbon

Clink cocktails in a rooftop bar. The terracotta rooftops are best admired from one of Lisbon’s many rooftop bars. LX Factory has a popular one. But some are more hidden – like PARK bar, which is found via the elevator inside a car park.
Spend an afternoon in Belem. There are two reasons to head here. One is the impressive UNESCO-listed monastery. The other is to grab a warm pastel de nata – custard tart – from the famous Pastéis de Belem bakery.
Ride the 28E tram. It’s the most famous route in the city. Get on at Largo Martim Moniz and get ready to take in epic views of the city. It’s a rickety ride, but your legs will thank you later.

Insider tips for visiting Lisbon

There are endless viewpoints for taking in the city, like Miradouro da Graca, and Miradouro das Portas do Sol. We’d recommend the one from Parque Eduardo VII – one of Lisbon’s biggest parks.
If you’ve got more than a few days, carve out time to visit Sintra. It’s a 40-minute train ride from Lisbon to reach this UNESCO-rated town. And you’ll be greeted with fairytale-style palaces, cuddled by mountains.
Whatever you do, bring comfy shoes. Lisbon’s the San Francisco of Europe, so there’s going to be some hill climbing involved at some (/lots!) of points.
